CHAN-DT is the Vancouver affiliate of Global Television Network (formerly CTV). CHAN is now owned by Westcom TV Group.
Westcom recently announced their intentions to eliminate 95 jobs across Canada, including BCTV news staff and sports anchors. Thankfully, most affected employees received either early retirement or buyout packages.
Newscasts
BCTV had an unparalleled dominance in the market ratings, particularly during late night hours. Their News Hour with Tony Parsons was one of the most watched programs worldwide and they also produced Canada Tonight – a semi-national newscast that reached millions around the world.
Its strong evening presence helped it stay ahead of newcomers like CKVU. To maintain its dominance, the station hired top local anchors like Bill Good and Pamela Martin, helping it remain unchallenged for many years.
However, after CanWest Global acquired Western International Communications in 2001, major changes were implemented. First and foremost, Canada Tonight replaced their in-house newscast.
In September 2001, CHAN also recruited Kevin Newman to anchor a national supper hour newscast called Global National. The program debuted with Newman anchoring the anchor chair.
Weather
Weather was never really the star of the show, but it certainly played a prominent role. While rain is never ideal, there are times when we just need to bundle up and head outside – whether that means light snowfall or light drizzle. Even in milder temperatures, you don’t want to miss out on anything outdoors!
Predicting precipitation levels in Canada is essential for staying warm during winter. We have all of the tools necessary for accurate forecasting – it just requires getting the right data into the right buckets!
If you need additional assistance, we can connect you to the top professionals in the business. Our network is tailored to meet all of your requirements so that no effort is spared on your behalf.
Sports
Bob Pascall, the head of sports at bctv news global, has been a fixture on Canadian television for over three decades. He’s an anchor and producer for various sportscasts on CBC, CKCO-TV, and BCTV.
In addition to local newscasts’ sports coverage, Global’s O&O stations also air highlights shows like Sportsline and Page in Ontario; 2&7 Sports at 11 in Calgary; and Sports Night in Edmonton. All these programs were once unified under the Global Sports brand but due to declining audiences since fall 2005 most have been cancelled.
Global’s flagship station in British Columbia, CHAN-DT, follows the same schedule as their other owned-and-operated (O&O) stations throughout Canada and the United States. At CHAN, they house their national news centre as well as production for various regional and national newscasts – including Global National.
Entertainment
BCTV News and Weather Department strives to keep viewers up to date on the latest events, headlines, and trends. Plus, there’s plenty of entertainment on the network, from classic television shows and movies to more modern offerings like HGTV or FoodNetwork. BCTV newscasts stand out for their innovative use of technology – from live interactive news tickers to HD graphics.
The bctv news global mobile app is an excellent source for local and national news, sports updates, and information. It’s free to download and features many interactive elements that make it simple to stay informed. Plus you can listen to radio stations across Canada broadcasting the latest local and international headlines as they happen. Plus you can chat with friends and family through voice-controlled text messaging or video chat features built right in. Moreover, the app has a calendar as well as weather widget for tracking your schedule easily.
